Today, we join married women from our community in Abu Dhabi to celebrate Vat Savitri, a festival deeply rooted in Hindu tradition. This special occasion honors the unwavering love and devotion of Savitri, who, according to legend, persuaded Lord Yama to bring her husband Satyawan back to life. The festival is marked by fasting, prayers, and rituals that reflect the strength of marital bonds and the power of faith.
Significance of Vat Savitri
Vat Savitri is observed during Jyeshtha Amavasya, and this year, it coincides with Shani Jayanti, adding to the day's spiritual significance. Married women fast and pray for the longevity, health, and prosperity of their husbands, showcasing their devotion and love. The festival's rituals include worshipping the sacred banyan tree, which symbolizes eternal life and strength.
Celebrations in Abu Dhabi
Our community members in Abu Dhabi have embraced this tradition with great enthusiasm. Over 50 women gathered, adorned in traditional attire, to participate in the rituals. They tied threads around the banyan tree, offered prayers, and listened to the Vat Savitri Katha, concluding the day-long fast in the evening.
